In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant explosions shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the region, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
