EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
